JASPER NATIONAL  PARK

On July 9-16, 2004 our family went on holidays to Jasper National Park. I was interested in photographing certain national park sites and go on several hikes.

PHOTOGRAPHIC TIPS

For scenery shots because the weather can be unpredictable I ended up going to Mt. Edith Cavell and Maligne Lake twice. If you are serious about animal pictures I would recommend Switzer National Park. They have several blinds throughout the park for you to patiently wait for the animals to photograph. Hinton is nearby for any of your basic needs. For family hiking shots, we went to Wilcox Pass, Angel Glacier, Cavell Meadows,  Maligne Canyon, Pocahontas, and Lake Jarvis. Future walks could include Stanley Falls Trail, and the lakes between Jasper and Hinton.

Hiking trails that I would not recommend for photographs include: Mary Schaffer Loop, Moose Lake Loop, Lac Beauvert (Jasper Park Lodge) and Graveyard Lake. There were not enough rocks, mountains and scenery for me.

PHOTOGRAPHIC EQUIPMENT

Canon Digital 3.2 pixel and Canon EOS 3000 35mm. Both were very light and easy to carry on a hike.

PLACES THAT ARE BEST PHOTOGRAPHED AT SPECIFIC TIMES:

IF I WENT THERE AGAIN

Instead of going to Spirit Island, I would concentrate on the Maligne Tours Boat House (which is located left from the boat tours dock). I would focus more on shooting photographs at Maligne Canyon at the 3rd bridge instead of shooting photographs at the Columbia Ice Field Interpretive Center. A better location is left of the Columbia Ice Fields where Mt Kitchner meets with the green grass and ponds from the glacier. I would concentrate on exploring the areas between Jasper and Hinton to take more pictures of the animals, lakes and mountains.

Jasper National Park and other interesting areas. Click on different pictures and Hinton to learn more about that area.
